The ‘Drogba effect’ revolutionises China

Didier Drogba’s arrival in Shanghai is already proving to be a milestone in the history of the Chinese League, one of the fastest-growing leagues in the world thanks to the colossal investments being made by the owners of the 16 franchises that make it up.
The man who won the Champions League for Chelsea has settled in quickly, and taken barely a month to justify the €33 million that he’ll receive during the two and a half seasons that he’s contracted to Shanghai Shenhua, which despite being one of the country’s most established clubs has experienced difficulties as of late.
The Ivorian striker’s winning spirit seems to have been contagious at the club managed by 'El Checho' Batista, from Argentina, and indeed hasn’t lost a game since the world’s third best paid player, behind Eto’o and Ibrahimovic, landed in China. From rock bottom of the Super League, Shenhua has climbed to ninth place thanks to the victory and three draws achieved whilst the Ivorian has partnered Nicolas Anelka up front.
"He’s a fantastic player, who’s full of class. He’s a real leader who’ll guide us to glory over the next couple of years", says Zhu Jun, Shenhua’s multi-millionaire president, a colourful character who’s also registered as a player with the club and has already lived out his dream of playing a few minutes alongside his new star signing.
